On July 10,1890, five Basque and Rioja-based vine growers created “Sociedad Vinicola De La Rioja Alta” in what is known as the Haro Station District. This was the beginning of a fascinating business venture in which the only dream of the five founders was to craft and age high quality wines. The European spirit which  we know today was present in La Rioja and in their winery from the very beginning. Mr Vigier, a French expert, was hired as technical manager and they were soon familiar with what is now known as “classic” production. The company changed its name to “LA RIOJA ALTA” in 1891, and has gone from strength to strength since then producing some of Rioja’s best and most sought after wines.

In 1970 the winery expanded with the construction of a new cask hall was built and they started to increase their vineyards, buying several estates. This was the time when new brands were introduced, such as Viña Arana and Viña Alberdi. These wines represent the tradition and inovation at Rioja Alta and are some of the most interesting examples of the classic Rioja style.

Made from 95% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo from Rioja Alta, specifically the boroughs of Rodezno and Labastida. After fining, it was transferred to 3.5 years old American oak casks in June, 2002, where it remained for three years. During this ageing process, it was racked six times using the traditional barrel-to-barrel method. It was bottled in September, 2005. Medium cherry red, clear and bright, with orange tones on the edge of the glass. Intense bouquet reminiscent of ripe berries and citric fruit, against a mentholated background with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, caramel and toffee. Medium-bodied and round to the palate, with sweet tannins blending with the slight acidity typical of the brand. Long aftertaste, with citric and balsamic aromas and flavours that ensure an excellent bouquet after time in the bottle. Viña Arana Reserva 2001 is ideal with appetisers, meat or even lighter fish. Great with vegetables, pasta, rice, poultry and dishes with mushrooms, together with creamy, not very cured cheeses. €24.95

After fermentation the wine was then transferred to American oak casks, where it was aged for 2 years; the first year in new oak and the second year in oak with an average age of 3 years. It was racked by hand four times by candlelight and bottled in December 2008.
Deep cherry red with a pinkish rim. Fresh and clean on the nose, with fine aromas reminiscent of ripe red berries, cherries and balsamic spices, including notes of clove, cinnamon and vanilla. Well-balanced on the palate with a silky mouthfeel, with good tannins, a lingering finish and a refreshing touch of acidity that gives the characteristic liveliness typical of Viña Alberdi. This wine will continue to slowly mature over the next 5 years.  A perfectly balanced wine from an outstanding vintage. Viña Alberdi is a highly versatile wine. It is perfect with canapes, tapas and barbeque food, as well as being an excellent accompaniment to rice and creamy pasta dishes, grilled meats and fish. €21.95 on Offer @ €17.56
