Slow and steady wins the race
October 3, 2012
Only produced in certain years, this is a rare wine – just 285 cases of ‘Slowhand’ were produced in 2006 from Muddy Water’s oldest vines in a part of the vineyard that always ripens less vigorously and a little differently from other vines. This wine had kid gloves treatment, 16 months in French oak, 30% new. it’s considered very special in the vineyard and with the gentlest of handling is named ‘Slowhand’.
One of the best Estates in Waipara, Muddy River is dedicated to the production of unique, hand-crafted wines. Michael East, a Christchurch medical specialist and his viticulture-qualified wife, Jane, bought their gently sloping property in 1992 and produced their first wine in 1996. Cold, frosty winters, warm dry summers and dry sunny autumns provide intensely flavoured ripe grapes.
Firm and structured as opposed to fruity and generous. It is a deep, dense Pinot with generous plum and redcurrant flavours along with earthy truffle and herb characters and a deep velvet palate. Drinking gloriously now.
