Pinot Grigio on the vine

Yes I said it wonderful Pinot Grigio, and I have enjoyed some in the last couple of weeks, yes there are wonderful wines of many types but in the last few months gone by many people have looked at me like I had two heads when i ventured to offer them Pinot Grigio as a like refreshing wine for ‘just drinking!’. It has nearly gotten to the stage of anything but, well not quite but I have received some very strange reactions. It seems the momentum has fallen away from this grape variety right back to NZ Sauvignon.

Anyway I’m waffling a few interesting facts about Pinot Grigio: 1) It’s also known as Pinot Gris 2) It is thought to originate in Burgundy 3) It is thought to be a Pink Skinned version of Pinot Noir 4) Yes it’s Pink 5) It likes cooler climates like Northern Italy, Germany and Alsace.

Personally I think that the best examples of the Pinot Grigio Style come from Italy, (Pinot Gris the rounder more full-bodied style I’ll head to France or Australia or New Zealand), and some of the wonderful wines I’ve tried of late are:

Livio Felluga Pinot Grigio 2011 Friuli Colli Orientali DOC €21.95

The nose is extremely fine, notes of jasmine and white flowers complimented buy a citrus note.  The palate is fresh and  clean with a nice balance and a light citrus note.

Franz Haas Pinot Grigio 2010 Alto Adige DOC €16.95

Fragrant floral bouquet with notes of sage, hay, almonds and sandalwood. After some time in bottle notes of honey develop. On the palate this wine is fresh and full-bodied with great finesse and elegance.

Il Poggione Cerretello Pinot Grigio 2010 Toscanna IGT €12.95

Fruity aromas of green apples, pears and stone fruit. Because of the fruit of the wine seems a little richer with fuller body than those from cooler areas. Some mineral character and lots of fruit on the palate, stylistically different from the others.

Antonutti Pinot Grigio 2011 Friuli Graves  DOC €12.95

Clean, crisp fragrance with intense yet elegant hints of quince, pear, green apple and lemon grass. Fresh, harmonious fruit on the palate with hints of spice and minerality, velvety and full-flavored with well-integrated acidity. A very fresh, crisp and satisfying wine.  A wine that punches above its weight.
